Rhys Morgan On Pseudoscience And Crohn’s Disease

by podblack on August 12, 2010

This is Rhys – he’s 15 years old and has Crohn’s disease.

“It appears a great number of the people who make up Crohn’s forum are in love with so called alternative medicines.”

This short ‘tweet-vid’ discusses what happened to him on a Crohn‘s Disease forum board and attitudes he’s come across (he’s also a rather good rhythm guitarist too!).

His blogpost ‘Bleachgate‘ at Rhys’s Blog features a text version of what happened and he’ll be featuring on a forthcoming episode of The Pod Delusion! You can follow him on Twitter, at rhysmorgan.

Thank you very much for helping to spread the word!
The support I’ve received is absolutely phenomenal.
Once again, thanks for the support and spreading the word!

hi Rhys
I loved your twitvid – so very well done! I loved your line that anecdotes are not serious scientific evidence!
I am a parent with a son with severe Crohns, and I constantly scan the serious and quack medical sites for what’s happening in the treatment of it. Yes, there are a lot of quack sites peddling quack cures for Crohns, cancer, etc etc as you have found. The cruel side is that these quacks take money from desperate people wanting a cure – when the “cure” doesnt work, then its becaure the afflicted one didnt follow the instructions etc, not because the cure was fake in the first place.
As for your shameful treatment by others in the forum… well, the world is sadly full of people with muddled minds that don’t like their pet prejudices attacked, and their usual tactic when confronted with facts they dont want to hear is to attack the messenger not the message – as you have found. And such people are simply not rational, so dont bother reasoning with them. Who could honestly have a rational belief in homoeopathy?
Keep up your good work but save your energies for where they will be appreciated.
Sincere best wishes too for the treatment of your Crohns.
- Andrew
