Wahh, Philosophy Camp went well, with no bouncing Serval cats seen anywhere – although I have discovered that the best solution to staying awake in case of emergency is a sleeping bag. Especially when I rolled myself up in it and started to lose circulation. I did (thankfully!) remain very much awake for some excellent lectures by visiting professors and teachers, from feminist philosophy to personal identity and Buddhism.
By the way, the new West Australian Philosophy in Schools website has been relaunched! Head to http://philosophywa.com and there’s details about forthcoming events such as the 40th Conference of the Philosophy of Education Society of Australasia Inc. (PESA). We’re currently working on adding some resources and there’s a feedback and contact link for inquiries.
In the meantime? I’ll be spending this week working on completing the Atheism and Faith unit I’m teaching… I may very well use this: from NewsBiscuit – Synthetic life form accuses God of ‘playing science’
The world’s first artificially created life form has accused God of ‘playing science’ and ‘meddling with things He cannot possibly understand.’
The single celled organism, created by Dr Craig Venter and his team, was said to be ‘outraged’ when it discovered that a supernatural being, not subject to any form of regulatory control, was still involved in the creation of life.
…Many ethicists believe that God has repeatedly overstepped the mark. ‘Nobody objects to the Lord producing a few miracles here and there,’ said philosopher AC Grayling, ‘but when he starts playing around with the very stuff of creation then He has clearly exceeded his remit. I am beginning to think that this omnipotence thing has gone to His head.’
