I’m really, really pleased to see that people have been checking out the post I wrote about university students needing support to get to TAM8 – and that the link to donate is being used!
Thanks so much, it’s great to see that people are willing to support, even with a few dollars, to this great cause! There’s still time to help out the students – as many as we can!
Prof. Barbara Drescher (who gives more details on her blog about how she’s on an Education panel AND doing one of the Sunday paper talks – do make sure you get in touch with her for resources and ideas!) has written the following on her site:
Students rarely have the funds to attend multiple conferences and they must attend academic ones as part of their education.
So, we are asking for your help. Every little bit counts.
Some very dedicated people have been extremely generous, and I am hoping that the greater community will show us that you understand the need to promote the efforts of young, qualified scientists to become tomorrow’s science communicators by donating $5 (more is welcome and needed, of course, but the gesture is significant itself) to helping these students get there this year. I think that if we can get them off the ground, they can take it from here.
Both Barbara and myself will be contributing to Dragon*Con as well, later this year, as panelists and presenters – so I really hope that people who are attending either of those conventions have the chance to meet us. It’d be particularly wonderful to know that you were some of the brilliant, generous people who have helped out students be a part of such events.
Use the easy Paypal button below and zip Barbara a note to tell her that you’re helping her team make a difference!
Send some worthy Woo Fighters to TAM8!

You’re making me cry, Kylie (in a good way).
What’s more: the posts alone are motivating. I have been getting email from the students about how excited and inspired they are. Christos is preparing for the CFI Student Leadership Conference (which they were kind enough to fund for him) by getting to know the community and its goals. Dylan is busy writing more for the blog, and Alex, the CSUN president who is unable to attend TAM8, is brainstorming for the fall – he does not want to miss TAM9.
We are close to raising enough to send 1 student and I am optimistic that we will get to at a least 2.
I can’t thank you enough.
I cannot argue with this. I’m lucky enough because of circumstances to head to TAM London this year. I’m more than happy to help others do similar… a worthy cause.
