Podblack Updates! Virtual Drinks, Very Cool TAM8 Links And Downtime!

by podblack on June 18, 2010

Last night I decided to have no. more. promoting. of. other. people’s. projects. and. things – until I get the rest of my work done! I have too many of my own projects to finish!

So – *ahem* – here’s some… promoting of things.

Sorry. But they are all great causes and ideas, by some wonderful and much appreciated friends who put up with more of my grumbles and whinges than I thought humanly possible. If I’m really lucky, they won’t put me on ‘mute’ when they do the following:

Skepticality Speaking Beyond BS AT TAM8!

Desiree Schell (Unofficial) AMAZING (Live) Podcast Edition of Virtual Drinking Skeptically Live Ustream from Suite, Tokbox Party with Drinking Skeptically in the Bar. Join Robynn McCarthy (Swoopy), Heidi Anderson, Barbara A. Drescher, Desiree Schell and CELEBRITY GUESTS!

Time: 9:30PM Thursday, July 8th – Location: Suite Level at the South Point Hotel and Casino (Limited live seating!)

Honestly, I’m attending just on the basis of the sheer coolness of the NAME of the event. There are some provisos in regards to how technically likely it is that long-distance participants can see / join in with everything that goes on, but the very fact that it’s happening at all is a testament to how inclusive and wonderful these women are.

Speaking of TAM8 – there’s still some help needed! Barbara Drescher’s team of scientists, who I mentioned previously, are getting closer to their goal! But closer isn’t quite there yet! Help Students Get To the Amazing Meeting – SheThought.com

This morning I discovered that, upon hearing that her proposal for a Sunday presentation was accepted, Blag Hag Jennifer McCreight managed to raise over $1500 in less than 8 hours, simply by asking.

Well, gee. It did not actually occur to me to simply ask people to help out. I assumed that people who wanted to help would donate to the TAM scholarship fund, but of course it is not possible to know whom you are sending to TAM when you contribute to such a fund. So, it occurred to me to test the community’s commitment to encouraging a new generation of skeptics to strive for quality activism by finding out if we can match in 2 weeks what McCreight did in a few hours.

I have 4 well-trained young Woo Fighters – all scientists – who, if they could afford to go to TAM8, would jump at the chance and would use what they learned wisely. None are scheduled to speak this year, but I will make this promise: every Woo Fighter who is able to attend TAM8 because of you will submit a proposal for a Sunday paper next year, and I will personally oversee this process to ensure that they produce a high-quality presentation on a relevant topic or original research.

In addition? Dr Janis Bennion from Ladies Who Do Skepticism is going to feature on today’s Skeptic Zone podcast!

Ladies Who Do Skepticism was founded in April 2010, with the aim of bringing together women who want to chat openly about their own critical thoughts without being afraid to ‘spoil the fun’ for those who don’t enjoy such a strong link to rationality… We hope to have branches all over.  If you don’t have one in your area and you’d like one, let us know (see ‘Contact’ page).

In the meantime, you can hear two Ladies Who Do Skepticism from the Manchester and Liverpool groups discussing their thoughts about the group on the Righteous Indignation Podcast Episode 50, BBC Radio Manchester AND the Guardian Newspaper!

In the meantime, I’ll be on Virtual Drinking Skeptically (if the internet is willing… it has been REALLY dodgy recently)…

… which for me is about 7am this Saturday morning?

No, I’m not kidding. I hope this cough I’ve developed goes by then, because the only ‘Skeptically Drinking Virtually‘ I’ll be doing is lemon drop drinks or green tea and waving a placard going ‘Yes, You’re Very Funny About My Pyjamas‘ in response to everyone. No students of mine allowed, or else you’ll get bonus homework for the weekend in your inbox. :p

In other news – this site is well overdue for an overhaul and a tidy-up, so that will be my goal for the forthcoming week. If things aren’t posted regularly, or if I’m just popping in YouTube links – that’s why. :)

Oh! I only just discovered last night – I’m in the latest edition of the Australian Skeptic magazine – three times!

Once as a co-author with the wonderful, much-appreciated Dr Martin Bridgstock, with an article on Daniel Loxton and Reed Esau.

BTW – How to Keep Your Child Reading All Summer Long? By reading Daniel Loxton’s Evolution, according to New York Metro Parents mag!

My interview with Dr Christopher French (that you would have heard on the Skeptic Zone) and an additional article on the Global Atheist Convention that was earlier this year – all feature too!

Right, I have work to finish. Enjoy your weekend!

I think the time of this event is odd. It happens 30mins into the JREF Reception at TAM.
