Perth Homeopathy Obsession – The Cost Of Quackery

by podblack on June 16, 2010

I’ve blogged briefly about this previously – particularly how Peter Dingle had a goal to publish a book about how he healed his wife through homeopathy?

Perth Now: Nurse tells how cancer patient Penelope Dingle was ‘writhing in pain’

In an inquest at the Perth Coroner’s Court,  registered nurse and family friend Deborah Combes said she believed Penelope Dingle was dying after being called to assist the ailing woman in October 2003.

Mrs Dingle, who attempted to treat her colorectal cancer with homeopathy and natural remedies after being diagnosed in 2003, died in August 2005.

… She said Mrs Dingle’s husband, prominent Perth toxicologist Peter Dingle, told her she had not seen a doctor “for months” and was instead relying on the directions of homeopath Francine Scrayen.

Ms Combes said Mrs Dingle was “completely obsessed” with the homeopathic regime and initially refused to take pain relief.

“I couldn’t understand why someone would go through so much pain and agony,” Ms Combes said.

I have seen Peter Dingle lecture – he is a regular on the Perth schools circuit on topics such as resilience and general motivation talks (he’s often hired as a graduation guest speaker). I very much doubt health education teachers will approve of his appearance on campuses after this, however.
However, he has, as far as I know, never addressed health matters in this regards in schools.

In slightly related news and thanks to Helen (who also appears to have a cold this week! Get well soon, Helen!) – I have been sent a link to the following:

Telethon Institute for Child Health Research Vaccination.

Peter Dingle does more than give resilience and general motivation talks.

He is advertised on the UWA extension course website as a Health and Nutrition Specialist.

He can give you advice on “IMPROVE YOUR MEMORY AS YOU AGE” and “YOU AND DIABETES TYPE 2″ and on “HEALTHY EATING, HEALTHY DIGESTION, HEALTHY YOU” as detailed below.

HEALTHY EATING, HEALTHY DIGESTION, HEALTHY YOU
Dr Peter Dingle, Health and Nutrition Specialist
Easily 80-90% of the chronic illnesses we suffer from are
a result of our diet and lifestyle. The solution is not in any
miracle drug, but in healthy eating and digestion. Food is the
best medicine, but only if you can digest it. You will learn how
good foods can be your lifelong medicine, and also, how to
improve your digestion and why digestion begins before you
get the food near your mouth. This course will change the
way you eat and feel – for the better!

As an ex-melanoma sufferer, my judgement is tainted a little by my memory of him telling a willing media that parents should stop using sunscreen because it can give their kids cancer – and that the Cancer Council won’t say anything because they have a vested interest in selling the stuff.

You could have segued from the story on Homeopathy by mentioning the vaccine talk is partly in response to the anti-vaccine feeding frenzy stirred up by the Dingle protege, and alleged Ph.D student Judy Wilyman and her AVN mates.
At least it looks like there will never be a shortage of people volunteering for the placebo arm of placebo controlled trials.

Hal? I kind of thought I DID – read again? I was even AT the AVN talk. I have been securing permission to record the talk at the hospital, on July 1st and already talked to them. They were very kind.

As it is, it appears that the ‘He Said / She Said’ has continued to roar all over the West Australian press with conflicting reports as to ‘who is to blame’, regarding Dingle and the homeopath – and at this rate, I’m planning on leaving it up to the courts to make a final statement, considering how much mudslinging I’ve seen from all sides. It’s been distasteful from the start and clearly isn’t getting any better.
