I think most of us today pretty much accept that LOB was intended to parody the life of Jesus of Nazareth but even Acts of the Apostles demonstrates that doomsday-martyrdom cult leaders were a dime a dozen in the 1st century. What there was Simon Magus in Samaria, then bar Jesus in Cyprus and then some others I can’t think of off the top of my head.
I’ve seen the debate, must have been two or three years ago now. The two things that amazed me were the fact that Palin and Cleese were playing the straight man while Malcolm (a former philandering dandy) and the Bishop were hamming it up. Also, how poorly the two proponents of Christianity debated. They lost the debate handily.
