If you are here due to PZ Myers linking to this site and are in Perth – the Perth Skeptics Meetup are planning to attend. Contact me via the comments on this blog-post.
THIS LECTURE IS SCHEDULED FOR TOMORROW, 1st June at the Library.
The State Library does not make any judgment about individuals, groups or organizations, unless there is a clear breach of law, policies or procedures, in which case we may act to exclude clients.
I acknowledge your opposition to the Australian Vaccination Network but this does not provide grounds for the State Library to exclude this group from using a public facility for lawful means - Margaret Allen, Chief Executive Officer and State Librarian, State Library of Western Australia.
Dr Paul Effler, the medical co-ordinator of the immunisation program in WA, said people no longer saw the diseases prevented by vaccines and so focused on the side effects.
“I think vaccines have been a victim of their own success,” he said. “If you think of a world with no vaccines, think of what disease rates in children would look like. It would be like going back 50 years and seeing what meningitis did to children, killing them and making them deaf…
…Dr Effler said the rise in conscientious objections was partly because some parents had been convinced by anti-vaccine campaigners. – The West Australian Newspaper, ‘Child Vaccination Rates Plunge’, 28th May, 2010.
Are you seated comfortably? Then we’ll begin.
Once upon a time in Australia, there was a horrible, horrible group who called themselves the Australian Vaccination Network or the ‘AVN’.
Unlike their rather sensible and science-forward-sounding name, they were actually all about telling parents and communities that vaccinations gave kids autism and poisoned them.
With cheerful (and bordering on the demented) dedication, they gave misleading advice in parenting magazines, radio shows and essentially anywhere they could snap up an audience. This included the State Library of Western Australia, with a lecture scheduled in June.
Because of their name, many media groups in their country thought they had some kind of authority behind their claims and would often consult them in an effort to create ‘balance’.
They even had groups book them to do lectures, as they posed as health advisory experts and drew upon sciencey-sounding claims that were also touted by people overseas with similar goals to them. Some of those overseas people used terms like ‘mother’s intuition’ on popular daytime programming, and had famous boyfriends who gave them insane amounts of money to keep them shining the smiles that turned up on Oprah specials.
Oprah? Oprah. Yes, that Oprah, the one that features in a Newsweek article called “Why Health Advice on ‘Oprah‘ Could Make You Sick” and was criticised in Slate Magazine.
The head of the AVN was Meryl Dorey, and many Australian skeptics could quite easily point out her errors in reasoning, using the power of the internet, speaking out at public venues and even running advertising.
Despite all the growing evidence to the above statement, there was always the gruesome reality that this was much like the James Randi ‘unsinkable rubber duck’. Worst of all, Dorey and her followers treated with intense cruelty those who tried to question them, especially if they were lone families or individuals.
One such case was the tragic death of a little baby. The AVN claimed that it wasn’t because whooping cough rates rising due to lowered vaccination rates in their region as a result of their intense campaigning – and in fact, shouldn’t the parents of the dead child make the autopsy records available to the AVN on demand so it can be dragged through the mud even further for their ends?
Meryl Dorey’s endorsement of David Icke (a British writer who promotes the notion that vaccines are deadly, and has also devoted himself since 1990 to researching “who and what is really controlling the world’, and claims that the Illuminati are a race of reptilian humanoids and that many prominent figures are reptilian, including Queen Elizabeth II)… was also rather disconcerting:
“…we are already seen as rabid, idiotic fringe-dwellers by so many in the mainstream, it does our argument no good to bring in conspiracy theories which, though we may subscribe to them, are unprovable” – Meryl Dorey.
Naturally, the AVN leapt at the chance to spread more misinformation in Western Australia, after reports from the Department of Health and Aging reported on how ‘Health authorities continue to put seasonal flu vaccine on hold for young children‘. Sadly, it appeared that the State Library of Western Australia wants to promote the AVN and their message regardless.
Nobody may live particularly happily-ever-after if the lecture at Perth’s Alexander Library is canceled – but at least it’s an improvement over promoting pseudoscience and dangerous anti-health views, in what should be a venue that promotes education and culture.
The End.

Trying to work out where providing access to the AVN to misinform the public sits in their strategic directions?

“It’s not illegal.” What a brilliant, well thought out reason for the WA Library Service to damage public health.
Hopefully this will tarnish the State Libraries reputation. They are contributing to the damage and suffering caused by the AVN because the seminar is being promoted their name. As a result they cannot claim an impartial position and must be held accountable for the information distributed under their name by the AVN.
I’m sure this seminar will discredit the Library as a source of information.
No – I don’t think it should tarnish their reputation, nor discredit them. But I would like there to be the opportunity for more information to be allowed, rather than the one-sided version that is given. I’m currently sourcing some more resources, rather than having the ‘Jenny McCarthy’ line pushed as the only way. :/
Interesting. So,- Margaret Allen, Chief Executive Officer and State Librarian, State Library of Western Australia. would be quite happy with “Holocaust Denialists”, since “Holocaust Denial” is not a crime in Australia.
Nice writing
I wonder if David Ike has been watching to much Doctor Who? they have a race of humanoid races who are reptiles in them LOL. I do baffle at anyone who belives him.
Really you would think that would mean instant discreditation for anyone who supports an ex footballer cocaine addict turned author kindof :S.
I think what people are dealing with when it comes to Mother Doom (Meryl Dorey) and the state library is the law and the intepretation of the person who has to enforce the law. I dont think blaming Margaret from the state library will help or saying she is promting AVN is going to have any effect on them the libraries decison.
I am sure they have had worse than the AVN there before.
It is the proof the hard evidence after Mother Doom has given her talk and what has said may be able to get her banned for life all around Australia and her ilk .
If dealing with sensible people Mother Doom is easily discredited, if dealing with emotionally vulnerable people and less educated Mother Doom wins.
Not sure if you have come across these links before. I have no idea if we have similar in Australia I have been looking on and off for a few years now.
Provaccination American sites non profit, if we dont we need one in Australia.
http://www.ecbt.org/
http://www.vaccinateyourbaby.org/
This doesnt help http://www.nqasg.org.au/links.php
if you look in the links you will see they list the AVN I have emailed and sent the information on them and still they wont remove it.
As many other places who list the AVN dont see how they are supporting them and allowing for the purpetration of misinformation and risk.
This is promoting the AVN and taking advantage of people.
While Butcherbird makes a good point, I think the Librarian can not be thought of too harshly given the level of ‘debate’ within the public on this subject. So many people who have never heard of the AVN or MD refuse vaccination for their children, they think it is a legitimate concern. It’s an old mantra but Education Education Education is needed, along with good marketing.
As for Clare, one can never watch too much Dr Who! Unless you happen to be a looney who keeps a sonic screwdriver in your pocket.
I wish Doctor Who would make a visit to the Library. :/ He’d distract everyone and then maybe the lecture would be canceled.
If you are reading this due to the link from PZ Myers’ blog? I am attending this lecture and plan to hand out flyers at the conclusion. Please meet me near the coffee shop at the library, from about 6pm onwards. Spot me with ‘Perth Meetup.com’ sign.
I’ll be the one with a book, probably working on my homework for class tomorrow.
What time is it on tonight?
Dear all,
I’ll be there from around 6pm – the lecture starts around 7.30pm. Should finish around 8.30, I suspect? So, if you’re around, I’ll have flyers to hand out after. Attendance requires tickets, via the AVN website.
K.
T’would be great to come along and see the fireworks but I have to work
I’m not sure about the ethics of the library profession in Australia, but in America we support completely open free speech. At my library, anyone – anti-vax nuts, Holocaust deniers, you name it – can reserve a meeting room and hold a public meeting as long as they don’t ask attendees for money and clean up after themselves.
It’s a common saying here that a library’s collection isn’t sufficiently broad unless everyone can find a book within it they’d find offensive. I respect Margaret Allen and the State Library for their stand. I equally respect (and support) those who speak for science and reason against the anti-science whack jobs.
LOL Preacher I do wonder if David Ike has been using Dr Who as a fact finding mission.
Hmmm maybe I am a looney as I have a sonic screw driver application on my phone
Hmm.
is this the thin edge of the wedge of the “fair and balanced” bulldust line?
loudmouthed opinion masquerading as verifiable fact in this case.
Just to clarify, attendance inside the seminar requires a ticket (sold out I think) – but I’m sure Podblack will be glad of your assistance outside of the meeting.
Good luck with it all PB. Wish I could be there.
ahh was all for coming until i found out it is $10.
Substantial portion of my youth allowance, and right before exams.
