Happy International Women’s Day – Does My Sassiness Upset You?

by podblack on March 8, 2010

If you haven’t checked out the distinctly full-of-attitude and piece-of-her-uncensored-mind given by Helen Razer, just in time for International Women’s Day called Louis Nowra Needs a Good Vajazzling then perhaps you should be clicking that link to learn exactly why Nowra’s snark is well and truly given the kicking it deserves.

Last Friday, Australian magazine The Monthly published an essay on The Female Eunuch to “commemorate” the book’s fortieth anniversary. Here was an opportunity to contextualise what is arguably the most popular work ever written by an Australian public intellectual.

What a shame that didn’t happen. What a shame they didn’t count on Razer having both a mind and female genitalia. Bad Hostess website gives you all the details on that, the puzzlement that is … I decline to use the word ‘vajazzling’, since I’ve already pointed out that pubic hair is not the vagina… and dyeing parts of one’s body for reasons I’ve yet to quite fathom, let alone figure out.

You can probably read it whilst listening to Professor Angelou reciting her poem, “And Still I Rise,” from her volume of poetry, published in 1978.

In the meantime, I’ll be getting back to writing on the philosophical and social issues that involve the notion of a utopia., something I’m currently teaching to my high-school classes.

Still got a long way to go, in my opinion.

From Femnisting.com:

The two definite highlights of the evening were Mo’Nique’s win for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Precious and Kathryn Bigelow’s win for Best Director for The Hurt Locker.

Kathryn is the first woman to ever win in the Director category, and as was pointed out by AnnaLeighClark on twitter last night, it happened just before midnight and the start of International Women’s Day. Also, as Shelby Knox pointed out, the statistics about this award were pretty stark: 82 years, 400 nominations, 4 women nominated, 1 awarded.

A current event to add to the list of things to celebrate today: An Oscar Win for International Women’s Day! Pretty nice timing, no?

Already added, if you read the end.

The stats say it all Kylie, at the Oscars 82 years = 1 winner, this is so stark and shows why we need to educate the community about equality for women, we need to maybe look at the children and teach them to respect females from a young age and hopefully things can change in future generations. As for the sparkly bits downstairs I question whether this is being done for themselves or is it just to impress others and gain some attention, who do you show it to?, its not like a new pair of shoes that others can see.I listened to Token Skeptic Podcast today, my first one, good work.

For us who are not into acting, there is this:

Let us also celebrate women scientists, which include the very awesome Dr. Raichie!

(note: I have read a biography of Ada Lovelace, and it is actually quite sad. She never really knew her father, she died a painful death due to cancer and one of her children did not do well in the sea-going profession chosen for him. On the other hand, a recent biography of Lillian Moller Gilbreth was much better (even though she lost more than one child to stillbirth or disease).

Another note: I have the following document in *.rtf format (I scanned a better copy in an optical character reader and (mostly) corrected the errors by hand):

Chris – I’ve celebrated Ada Day (last year) – and I have already blogged last month that I’ll be doing so again…

Oops… this is the first year I had heard of it!
