#AtheistCon Setlist

by podblack on March 15, 2010

…additional fond memories – being compared to the ‘Goddess Kali’ by Taslima Nasrin because of all the skull-themed clothing I wore and Dawkins cheekily scolding me for ‘laughing at him’ as he watched a YouTube video of one of his young fan’s adoration.

As for comments about my presentation? People overwhelmingly so far have said they loved it and thanks for your support. ;) I’ll be doing it again, maybe (likely?) at TAM Australia, and most definitely at Dragon*Con in the USA – fingers-unskeptically-crossed! :D

The Setlist:

The Moderator’s Opening – Take Me Out – Franz Ferdinand

Phillip Adams – Concerto C Minor – Bach

Max Wallace – Chasers on the Catholic Church – The Chasers (Video)

John Perkins – Way of the World – Max Q

Taslima Nasrin – The Riots – featured on YouTube (will find the link)

Women’s Panel – Devil Woman – Cliff Richard

Tamas Pataki – When I Ruled The World – Coldplay

AC Grayling – Philosophy – Ben Folds Five

PZ Myers – Mr Deity and the Science Advisor (Video

Peter Singer – Imagine – John Lennon

Ian Robinson – Also Sprach Zarathustra – Strauss

Kylie Sturgess – Ms Information – George Hrab

Richard Dawkins – Right Here, Right Now – Fatboy Slim (btw, he’d never seen it before and wanted to watch the whole thing!)

Haha. Dawkins’ reaction to the Fatboy Slim video was quite charming.

He loved it! Was sad that they stopped it, he wanted the whole song! :D I guess he didn’t realise that we’d all be going ‘NO, want DAWKINS, not music vid!’ :)

You were awesome Kylie, I enjoyed how you brought in the statistics and did a bit of a comparison. So sad that the convention is over – I tried tracking you down during the breaks but didn’t have any luck, I’m guessing you were quite busy behind the scenes and such.
Was great to put a face to the voice, I’m a regular listener of the Skeptic Zone.

Amusing reading some of the articles that have been published about the convention, particularly those written by journalists who obviously didn’t attend but tried to sound as if they had (one in particular babbled about Einstein and other ‘authorities’, which I don’t recall ever actually being mentioned during the entire convention).

‘Einstein’? When, where? :/

Thank you so much!! :) I noticed that the presentation of Robyn Williams has appeared NOWHERE in any coverage… which leads me to think that perhaps all the journos skipped his and my presentation for a coffee? Fair enough they skipped mine (I’m just a freelance writer in comparison to all the real names), but Williams is a leader in science communication! :/

loved the set list but especially loved some of the background music including Tim Minchin… excellent choice!

The war story/account Robyn told is unforgettable.

Your presentation was excellent and had (IIRC) more research data in it than any of the other presenters.

Plus the other speakers had the luxury of not being an MC as well. :)

Kylie
Fantastic job at the conference both in your MC role and your presentation. A wicked sense of humour encapsulating a very bright mind. I will be more actively involved now, a whole new world of opportunity to discuss the issues and do something about them.

Last night, the documentary ‘The Greatest Silence: Rape in the Congo‘ was featured on Showcase Two, Foxtel.
Filmed on location in the Congo, this documentary breaks the silence about the systematic rape of tens of thousands of girls and women in the war-torn Congo.
Director Lisa F. Jackson, herself a survivor of gang rape, offers a no-holds-barred documentary that excruciatingly details the testimonies of Congolese women and even some of the rapists themselves as she visits hospitals, small villages, churches and virtually anywhere else she can find a woman willing to share her story. Winner of the Eric Parker Social Justice Award during the recent Indianapolis International Film Festival.”

Kali, Kylie, tomayto, tomahto…

Good job, you.

BIG DAMNED HUGS you for being with me for all of this! :) PZ is really quite fond of you, you know. :) Mind, he’ll have to brush up on his poetry-writing skills, as you know. :p
