While I’ve been busy completing projects, photocopying, organising programs and essentially catching up on the list of ‘to do’ – I learned today that I neglected to mention something.
I was dropping off a CD to a friend, for them to use in an upcoming convention and I mentioned my new job. They were rather surprised and it occurred to me that maybe I wasn’t very clear on what I’m doing this year. In addition, I started having a semi-conversation (on Twitter, it’s a little tough sometimes with 140 characters to get detailed) in regards to a news item on Catholic schools and the now-compulsory subject Religion and Life.
I’m now a religious education teacher – teaching Philosophy and Ethics along with lower school Religion and Philosophy Studies. In addition, I’m continuing to work on research and assisting a PhD student, as I have done for the past two years. This will involve a significant amount of work and dedication, and I wouldn’t be surprised if my blog-posts are one of the first things to be cut back upon. After a few days working on podcast recordings, I sincerely hope to keep them up as best as I can.
Anyway – feel free to ask questions and hope to keep up some writing in the interim. I may post some older blog posts or direct people to read them if you’re unfamiliar with the posts on this site. As always, you can see the ‘Essays’ link in the banner.

?? Aren’t you presenting at the Global Atheist Convention?
Well spotted!
Yes, I’m presenting and people can see the overview of all the presenters at http://www.atheistconvention.org.au.
Slightly confusing…. don’t you have to be religious to teach religion at a religious school ?
If not, great school ! Please let me know which one so I can consider sending my kid there.
Good for you!
I hope you will be enjoying the new job. The topic sounds right up your alley.
Sounds fascinating.
@If you had to be religious(ie Nun or Brither) they would not have religious ed – not enough f them left. At the Catholic school I taught at you had to do Catechism classes.
“Don’t you have to be religious to teach religion at a religious school ?” No, you just have to be qualified on the topic, I suspect. It’s a great course, I’m keen to teach myself more as I do it too. There are very few RE teachers out there, it seems, at least in this state. :/
That’s great! I was taught religion by a “brother” at my Catholic school. I figured it was some sort of requirement to pretend you believe in it.
Congrats on your new and exciting position.
Asimov wasn’t religious and he wrote a wonderful history of the bible.
Good on you for the new job@
