Lawndale Votes – No To Vampires!

by podblack on January 7, 2010

I know what I’ll be doing next election. Not voting for this. Huffington Post – City Councilman Argues Against Removing Public Garlic Plants For Fear Of Vampires:

The residents of Lawndale, California are causing a stink over the town’s plants. Apparently, the roads are lined with garlic–which either smells like skunk or marijuana depending on who you talk to. KTLA did a report on the dispute and spoke with Councilman Jim Ramsey who argued against the removal of the plants: “The only reason we had garlic put in was so we could keep the vampires out of town. And since we have had garlic I haven’t seen one single solitary vampire in town.”

It’s pretty clear to me that the councilman has a dry sense of humor and was delivering a joke — and the reporter played along with it. Hawthorne is near my old stomping grounds and I remember when the city was redeveloped. Hawthorne is a suburb of Los Angeles, about three miles from the ocean. It gets very hot on some summer days and the temperature can drop forty-five degrees at night when the fog rolls in. The garlic plants were chosen mainly because they are visually attractive, and because they tolerate smog and profound seasonal temperature swings well.

Pity he wasn’t given enough sound-bite then to come across as anything more than insisting that they were true! :p

I think they cut it oddly. The “It’s a joke” was meant to roll into the vampire bit. Unfortunately, our local news stations are positively terrible. The writing, editing, you name it – just BAD. One would think that it would be better in a market this big.
