I’m attending Perth Skeptics in the Park, with about a dozen people sitting around in the shade of a gorgeous Sunday, and I’m telling people about the 10:23 Campaign interview I just did for the Skeptic Zone podcast. If you haven’t checked it out, it features Marsh of the Merseyside Skeptics.
Since I’m keen on Perth Skeptics not just being a ‘pub-based’ skeptical gathering, being creative and encouraging each other to come up with ideas is vital. It’s not the easiest thing to do when you’re living in of the most isolated cities in the world!
Last year we passed on news of an all-ages Astronomy fair, the Tim Minchin concert and visiting science lectures and events. Every chance that the Perth Skeptics gets together, I take notes and pay attention to how we can improve the next gathering. I’m very fortunate that there’s a lot of talent amongst the attendees, so hopefully we’ll continue to keep the momentum going!
Soon enough, everyone at the SitP(ark) are suggesting upping the ante for the next event - not only a lecture by visiting Denmark blogger Kristjan Wager (of Pro-science) …but an opportunity to SUICIDE BY HOMEOPATHY!!
You read that right. 10:23 Homeopathy There’s Nothing In It by the Perth Skeptics In The Pub!
This will involve taking part in the 10:23 Event, as set out on the official site:
At 10:23am on January 30th (UK Time, so it will be an afternoon gathering for the Perth Skeptics at 4.00pm onwards), more than three hundred homeopathy sceptics nationwide will be taking part in a mass homeopathic ‘overdose’ in protest at Boots’ continued endorsement and sale of homeopathic remedies, and to raise public awareness about the fact that homeopathic remedies have nothing in them.
Sceptics and consumer rights activists will publicly swallow an entire bottle of homeopathic ‘pillules’ to demonstrate that these ‘remedies’, prepared according to a long-discredited 18th century ritual, are nothing but sugar pills.
The protest aims to raise public awareness about the reality of homeopathy, and put further pressure on Boots to live up to its responsibilities as the ‘scientist on the high street’ and stop selling treatments which do not work.
It’s great to snap up opportunities like this and network both locally and internationally. Big thanks to Luke Troy and the Perth Skeptics for thinking up the wonderful shirts that we’ll have to commemorate the event!
In addition, I urge people to also sign up for the Grassroots Skeptics Speakers Bureau, because organisers of events like me are always on the lookout for new presenters, new ideas and a chance to showcase other skeptics. Here’s to this Sunday and hope you enjoy a glass of water or two!

Haven’t been checking the blogs on my list lately – so I didn’t know this was happening till now. Funny though as it coincides with my latest Blogger post about how their paracetamol info sheet warns about checking with a pharmacist over possible interactions with homeopathic ‘remedies’.
