I’m sure you’ve all seen it by now, but it gives me a great excuse to do a round-up of what’s happening on the weekend and play it to say ‘happy birthday to Richard Saunders’ – make sure you tell him that if you’re at the event!
First – yes, it’s the Australian Skeptics National Convention, in Brisbane. Or ‘Briskepticon’ as we’ve all been calling it on Twitter (yes, yes, I know, thank you to the Americans for pointing out that the very name can imply something quite different…) That will be starting late Friday and finishing on late Sunday. Do stick around if you’re attending until the close on Sunday – I’ll be doing some MC-ing for the show!
The efforts to get together a little Skeptics in the Pub for Briskepticon have been immense – due to two events that are pretty well dominating the Friday (book launch with Dr Martin Bridgstock! Be there!) and Saturday (formal dinner), we ended up compromising, so no one has to gallop across the city trailing lost cars, confused people and ‘what was the name of the venue and how do we get back?‘ – nor miss out on the book launch. Perhaps there’ll be more going on after, but I know I’ll be there at 8pm!
From the Young Australian Skeptics site: Turns out the bar downstairs from the book signing closes at 9pm. The book signing is happening in the Kathleen Room, upstairs at the University of Queensland Club. The plan is to meet at the downstairs bar from 8pm, maybe get in a Think Tank and see what happens from there. While this is overlapping the book signing there’s nothing to say people can’t do both. (Thanks to Unifex/Gold for that!).
Other than that, there’s more details about speakers on the official site – the team will be doing their usual helping-behind-the-scenes or presenting, so please feel free to say hello!
- Dr Karl Kruszelnicki
- Dr Krissy Wilson
- Associate Professor Tony Taylor
- Dr Martin Bridgstock
- Peter Ellerton
- Barry Williams
- Peter Macinnis
- Rosemary Aird
- The Skeptic Zone Podcast
As for blogging, Tweeting – no idea about how easy it’ll be to get access to a computer (well, apart from the usual airport lounge), so if you don’t hear from me / read sporadically online our collective adventures (the Young Australian Skeptics will be there, wahooo!) – see you on Sunday!

Drat, I wanted to see a muppet say, “Just killed a man… Put a gun against his head… Pulled my trigger… Now he’s dead.”
I’m an American and don’t know what Briskepticon implies.
That’s what we Americans are best at — taking something innocuous and dragging it down into the depths of depravity! We learned it from our Puritan heritage — EVERYTHING IS DIRTY!!
(’course, now we do it because it’s funny!)
Well there is the bar ‘2nd Degree’ on campus, which used to be called ‘The Red Room’. It’s about two minutes walk away.

Perhaps after the downstairs bar closes on Friday?!
Cathy – if you have any, ANY further suggestions, add them to the YAS site too? So far, this looks to be the quickest, most planned venue and we can certainly move on from that point to ‘The Red Room’? Hope to see you there!
Can I please just plug the backchannel on #briskepticon on Twitter?
If you haven’t introduced yourself there, please do!
Hugs and kisses from @HappySinger. I’ll be the one that looks like me. I like Cooper’s Green, thanks.
Yes yes yes yes yes! See people on Twitter too – check out my sidebar, many of my Tweets feature it.
