UK Out Of CERN Rumour Debunked – Twitter Tells All

by podblack on October 5, 2009

Twitter-talk seems to have moved people quickly in regards to this story! Prof Brian Cox retweets about a ‘save Science blizzard‘ in response to an article that claimed that the Large Hadron Collider was likely to have UK support removed.

SundayTime online reported – and a rebuttal was written – Science and Technology Facilities Council:

The Sunday Times article of 4 October on UK involvement in the European particle physics laboratory CERN and high profile global astronomy projects, such as ALMA, is incorrect. The article has misquoted the Chief Operating Officer of STFC, Professor Richard Wade, and taken other comments out of context.

The fact is that UK membership of CERN is governed by an international treaty, and could only be changed with UK Government approval.

I quite liked the Tweet from Lord Paul Drayson in response. Excellent news and well done to Brian Cox for what I heard was a well-recieved talk this weekend in London.

But kind of nice that Twitter got the word out – I suspect that it was something the minister was well aware of in terms of being of use. :)
