Well, I wanted an excuse to post this picture and I knew that it wouldn’t be long before I could! Now all four people in it have contributed to the same award-winning podcast!
Looking for a reason. Why Astronomy? by Richard Saunders of Skeptic Zone Wednesday, Sep 23, 2009 - Richard Saunders asks leading astronomers and others why they think people choose a career in star gazing.
I suggested that Richard take part in the show and he spent some time getting as many interviews as he could for this special episode, particularly the many astronomers who attended Dragon*Con this year.
The 365 Days of Astronomy Podcast is a project that will publish one podcast per day, for all 365 days of 2009. The podcast episodes are written, recorded and produced by people around the world.
Cool picture isn’t it? Richard Saunders was so tired after this night (it was after the Skeptic Zone live show,
then the Geologic Show and then a party for Derek and Swoopy – so we were all rather worn out by the end of it all) that he doesn’t even remember this photograph being taken! I think it captures the moment well and big thanks to Barbara Drescher for taking it.
Dragon*Con, of course, was where the Parsec Awards were presented, and the 365 Days of Astronomy podcast won a Parsec! So, this photo features four people who have all contributed to the podcast – firstly, there’s Dr Pamela Gay, the astronomer, who also presented with me on a panel about Gender, Maths and Science (there’s a great summary here of what it was like on ScriptPhD).
It was a great opportunity to present as a woman supporting science and maths literacy on an international stage – I’m really grateful to her and Dr Ginger Campbell of the Brain Science podcast, after their incredibly busy schedules both at D*C and beyond.
You can also see in the picture George Hrab, who did the theme song (you can hear a great discussion of it in this episode – Slacker Astronomy’s interview) and me (I did an episode for July 1st, ‘S.K.A Music – The Square Kilometer Array). So, I think it’s a win for all of us pictured, and all of those who took part!
The next photo is Pamela Gay, with the award – so belated congratulations to 365 Days of Astronomy!
