I’m on the floor, again, like last year. This really seems to be the best place to be.
Ben Radford is talking about the claims of Nancy Weber – and her failure to match the specifics in the solving of a murder. There’s been a Skepticality show about it that you can find on episode #102.
Possibly the biggest laugh was reserved for Alex’s belief that the criticisms were summed up as:
“This is silly! … this is meaningless minutiae that gets in the way of really looking at the big picture.”
You can find the account of the case and how it ended up breaking down on Blake’s site, here.
So what impressed the police?
“In the 1995 book, the next day I went out to my driveway to pick up my newspaper, and read, ‘body of Amy [sic] Hoffman found in water tank in a wooded area of Randolph.’ As I read the account it went on to say that the body was fully clothed and that there was no indication of marks on the body.”
Whereas, the newspaper did indicate the cause of death…why was it being perpetuated, especially in Weber’s book and Alexx Tsakiris’ podcast? When the news of her death was detailed not only on the front page of the newspaper but in the NY Times? What happened? Apparently it boils down to vague details, retrofitting to increase specificity, to remember the hits and ignore the misses. The contribution of the podcast by Tsakiris doesn’t help!
Like many paranormal proponents – burden of proof not understood, belief that the TV is accurate and that just because a few police support the claims of psychics, doesn’t mean it’s really working. We see this in the Perth cases regarding psychic detectives.
In fact, Ben Radford has been posting lengthy posts refuting the claims on the Skeptico site, but they were removed. We’re hoping we might catch some of the video that Ben Radford has, but there’s a Q&A instead… Blake tells me that there’s the audio of what you might have missed from Alex’s show available via him.
Next, it’s the Mystery Investigators show! Hope the live-stream works… Richard is handing out minties, wish you were all here!!
