Auckland Skeptics – The First Meeting!

by podblack on September 13, 2009

I was very honored to be asked to attend the first meeting of the Auckland Skeptics -- which started in the pub at the Horse and Trap. From here, just like it is in my town, it can become Auckland Skeptics in the Park, at the movies, at the rallies, at the press-release party, and many other venues and projects and get-togethers as they choose. They brainstormed and proposed topics, ventures and all sorts of networking opportunities -- practically bubbling over with what they want to achieve as skeptics. Thank you very much to Daniel Loxton and his ‘What Do I Do Next’ document which was mentioned several times during the night!

With a total of fifty people attending and about twenty people taking part in an impromptu ‘Think Tank’ for a forthcoming episode of the Skeptic Zone podcast, I really look forward to hearing what they’ll have next in store.

Don’t forget to check out the magic show ”Shore Is Magic“, presented by one of the skeptics who attended! Big, big thanks to Mike, Gold and all of those wonderful people in Auckland and beyond who made this such a great night.

Hey, I’m from Christchurch! ;)

Seriously though, it was worn the trip to see those that did show up. Really good turn out. Very motivated group of people too. I started the Christchurch group with the intention of it being a little less organised, bur I’m thinking that my have been premature. :)

It was great meeting everyone. Hope to see one of you again in Wellington at the meetup and National Skepics Conference vat the end of the month.

Kylie, meeting you was a pleasure too. ;) Revisiting old IYA podcasts now too. :)

Thanks for your attendance as well as the video Kylie. It was great to have someone with gravitas in the skeptical community to help launch Auckland SitP.

Although I absolutely hate watching myself so maybe the video wasn’t a good idea after all ;-)

Why didn’t anyone tell me I look and sound mildly retarded?

It was a fantastic evening, and thanks to both Gold and yourself we finally have some skeptical people in Auckland getting together and looking to make a difference.

We’ll be sure to keep you in touch with what’s going on and I hope one day I’ll get another opportunity to discuss skeptical matters with you (and hopefully with Richard and Dr Rachie as well) whether it’s in Australia or New Zealand.

Mike, you were WONDERFUL AND CONFIDENT! Do not say such things about yourself! :) Do keep us in touch and the recording should be on the next Skeptic Zone. :)
