I’m far too busy to be on the internet at the moment – but couldn’t pass this one up. Douglas Adams meant a lot to me, as you could probably tell by the Skeptic Zone interview with Stephen Fry.
Douglas Adams, back in the day, was responsible for some of the game-play (and probably all the decent jokes) in ‘Labyrinth: the Computer Game‘. Published by Activision and developed by Lucasfilm Games, I spent some time back in 1986 on my Commodore 64, enjoying the fact that it combined two of my fave overseas artists, Bowie and Adams. Oh, and the fact that there were quite a few little in-jokes and towel references. You can even check out the Complete FAQ and Walkthru if you like. Ah, memories of smacking goblins on the head with a satisfying ‘bonggg’ sound and getting the nerd to make me climb the wall out of the oubliette…
From Absolute Astronomy:
Before the film Labyrinth came out, Lucasfilm Games was offered the opportunity to do a game based on it. Since the film was produced by Lucasfilm, it was decided that a team would fly to London for a week of brainstorming on the design – with Douglas Adams.
…”Adams really liked the word “adumbrate”, a rather obscure verb meaning “To prefigure indistinctly; foreshadow”. So it ended up on the verb list. This obscure word was used in an even more obscure puzzle at one point in the game — you had to “adumbrate the elephant” when you were stuck in a prison, and an elephant would come and break a hole in the wall, freeing you.”
So, keep your towel with you, in case of … adumbration. Vale, Douglas Adams.
Enjoy Nostalgia Girl’s take on the film and use it the next time someone whines about ‘films these days’ being such bad, bad examples for teen girls… ‘Sparkly Goblin King, Goblin King, take this plot, FAR away from me!!!!’

Thanks, podblack. You really know where your towel’s at.
Oh my…Bowie’s pants…!
Ha, you never seen it before, Karen? It’s pretty much the best summary, right there.
Awesome. Although I was really disappointed to learn that Bowie didn’t do the crystal ball trick himself!
Best Labyrinth review ever!
Oh yes! The man behind the ‘crystal ball’ (it’s known as contact juggling) is long-time friend of Penn Jillette: Michael Moschen.
Here’s a great vid of some of his work: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_h7nXU2xFNY
