A Short Break – Soon An Update

by podblack on May 10, 2009

Dear all,

Over the past few days there has been two five to six hour round trips to south of the state; some getting over a cold; one teacher workshop on critical thinking (where I presented on skepticism for the fourth time); a rather worrying development in the health of a co-worker; one house-guest (who has been great to have around) -- and one death in the family.

This has meant a limited amount of activity online and I’ve yet to do the links I’ve said I would (UPDATE! They’re at the end of this post!)… Click on the links in the top menu (especially ‘Reading Lists for Skepticism‘ and ‘Educational Resources‘).

Thanks and I hope things will be back to regular activity soon.

UPDATE -- links that were mentioned in the lecture on Friday:

Alom Shaha and his series Why Is Science Important:

Philosothon! 2009 at Hale School, Perth

Quirkology: How We Discover The Big Truths In Small Things -- by Dr Richard Wiseman

XKCD (good source for science-based comics) and Indexed (Maths and Venn diagram comics)

Philosophy For Kids books by Prufrock Press

Ganzfeld tests for psychic ability -- Skeptic’s Dictionary

Excellent ideas raised during the discussions:

The story of Harry Truman and the eruption of Mount St Helens.

The study of ontology -- what makes something real?

‘Did we discover or invent mathematics?’

‘Those who forget history are condemned to repeat it’.

‘Reality TV -- what is fair and reasonable? Does the process of being watched change what’s being watched? What’s the difference between consent and informed consent?’

Thanks again to all the teachers and Dr Haynes and Alison who were part of the day -- looking forward to the next workshop next month. Here’s hoping things will be less hectic for me then!

Ah, you’re forgiven, if it was all for educational purposes. :D

Well, all of this happened in the space of – two to three days. So, a bit of emotional juggling with the work and touching base.

Sounds like a shocker of a week. Take care

I don’t know, she hasn’t had to give up eating and sleeping yet (although the sleeping part is probably a pale reminder of what it used to be)

All is good, take care of real life first and tell us about it later

A few weeks ago I was daydreaming about what I would say if I were introducing you as a guest speaker to some hypothetical audience. How about this?

If I were to ask what name comes to mind when you hear the word ‘amazing’, then perhaps many of you would say ‘Randi’ and the rest of you would say ‘Maurice’. Well, our next speaker is a sort of cross between the two – part dedicated skeptic, part talking cat, and as you will shortly discover, something quite amazing of her own. Ladies and gentlemen, Kylie Sturgess!

You have my admiration and you owe me nothing. Your idea of regular activity would make most of us run for the hills, and apologising for not meeting the hypothetical expectations of your readers is crazy talk. Please allow yourself all the recuperation you want.

You seem to travel in your sleep! :) Sorry about your loss, hope your family is okay. I remember you making a comment on Twitter about the conflict you felt in regards to presenting when someone on your team was unwell and they were also supportive of alt med. So I hope that doesn’t add additional stress.

Thanks also for the links. :)
