Japan Confuses ‘Cloverfield’…

by podblack on December 20, 2007

… with real life.

Grrr, argh… Cloverfield monsters from space! Apparently this film was inspired by Japanese monster culture and is now promoting really irritating songs to prompt you to buy soda pop too, according to the hunt for spoilers online….

Anyway – relevance? UFOs ?definitely? exist, Japan spokesman says – Top government official certain despite lack of confirmed sighting

Japan?s air force has never spotted a UFO, but the country?s top government spokesman said Tuesday he ?definitely? believes they exist.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Nobutaka Machimura was speaking to reporters … ?I definitely believe they exist,? Machimura said as reporters erupted in laughter.

Also from The Australian -

“If Godzilla were to show up, it would be a dispatch for disaster relief.”

Well, at least that’s sorted. Good to know whose job it would be and who to blame when Shibuya’s youth are munched up, Lolita Goth looks and all.

Okay. No confirmed sighting. No evidence at all, really. Apparently it was in response to an opposition member who insisted inquiries be made about UFO investigations, which probably should make you think that perhaps he was being set up to be laughed at… Darn. Why doesn’t that happen more often with some of the more reprehensible politicians you know? Hmmm.

Then again I’m not surprised it’s a male politician; as you might have already realised, thinking that UFOs have visited earth happens to be a more popular trend with males, as shown within studies on beliefs in the paranormal (Gallup, & Newport, 1991 and 1996; Sparks, Nelson, & Campbell, 1995; Rice, 2003; IPSOS-Mori, 2007). I haven’t seen any research that particularly focuses on Japan… maybe I should get looking so I’m not like these unfortunate politicians who have nothing to substantiate their claims!

The topic of UFOs and aliens was raised in the last episode of the TANK vodcast, with some easy links online to how Betty Hill’s story was quite easy to pick holes in. Of course, the fabulous Skeptoid has some good information on the phenomenon in this episode.

Whilst I’m finishing up with these links (apologies for being less discussion-heavy these days and still not updating some promised posts… my nephew was born today, finally!) – the 76th Skeptic’s Circle has just been released and I’m very proud to see Digital Cuttlefish amongst the collection of reading!

If you stay on this site for 10 minutes, you can hear the monster scream.
